Building something real in the legal world isn't about flashy campaigns or big promises. It's about showing up every day and doing the work that actually matters.
Look, we didn't start Resonatrixx because we wanted another cookie-cutter law firm. Back in 2012, three of us were sitting in a downtown Toronto coffee shop complaining about how disconnected most legal services felt from what businesses actually needed. So we figured, why not try something different?
Started with three lawyers, one cramped office, and way too much takeout. We took on clients who felt ignored by bigger firms - small tech startups and local businesses that needed real guidance, not billable hours padding.
Moved to King Street West and brought on our first associates. We'd built enough trust that clients started referring their competitors to us - which honestly was the best compliment we could've asked for.
Launched our intellectual property division after noticing how many clients were getting burned by patent trolls and trademark issues. Brought in specialists who'd actually worked in tech before law school.
Yeah, 2020 was rough for everyone. We went fully remote in 48 hours and spent months helping clients navigate force majeure clauses and contract modifications. Learned a ton about what actually matters in business relationships.
We're now a team of 23 across multiple practice areas. Still in the same King Street office (just taking up more floors now). Still answering our own phones most of the time. Still figuring things out as we go.
These aren't just words on a wall - they're the stuff we argue about in meetings and try to live up to every day.
We don't do legalese when plain English works fine. If something's gonna be expensive or risky, we'll tell you upfront. Had too many clients come to us after getting buried in jargon elsewhere.
Some of our first clients are still with us. We grab coffee with them, celebrate their wins, and yeah - sometimes commiserate over the tough stuff. That's just how we work.
Business doesn't wait for 48-hour turnarounds. We try to be responsive - not perfect, but responsive. Sometimes that means answering emails at weird hours or jumping on quick calls between meetings.
Your business, your ideas, your people - that's what keeps you up at night, so that's what we focus on. Not every legal battle is worth fighting, and we'll tell you which ones aren't.
Laws change, industries evolve, new tech creates new problems. We're constantly reading, taking courses, and learning from mistakes. The day you think you know everything is the day you become useless.
We work hard, no doubt. But burned-out lawyers make bad decisions. Everyone here has lives outside these walls - families, hobbies, actual interests. We try to respect that, even when things get hectic.
We're lawyers, sure - but we're also parents, cyclists, amateur chefs, and people who occasionally know how to have fun. Here's who you'll actually be working with.
Managing Partner
Corporate Law & M&A
Started this whole thing back in 2012. Spent 8 years at a Bay Street firm before realizing bigger isn't always better. Called to the Ontario Bar in 2007, also admitted in New York. Still can't believe people trust me with their companies.
Education: JD - Osgoode Hall, MBA - Rotman
Bar Admissions: Ontario (2007), New York (2010)
Senior Partner
Intellectual Property
Joined in 2014 after getting fed up with how disconnected IP law felt from actual innovation. Worked as a software developer before law school, which helps when clients try to explain their tech to me. Ontario Bar 2009.
Education: JD - University of Toronto, BSc Computer Science - Waterloo
Bar Admissions: Ontario (2009)
Partner
Employment & Labour Law
One of the founding three. Used to do union-side labour work, then switched to management-side, so I've seen both perspectives. Makes for interesting conversations at family dinners. Called to the Bar in 2008, been here since day one.
Education: JD - Western Law, BA Labour Studies - McMaster
Bar Admissions: Ontario (2008)
Partner
Litigation & Dispute Resolution
Came aboard in 2017 when we realized too many disputes were heading to court that shouldn't have. I'd rather negotiate a settlement over lunch than spend months in discovery, but when we need to fight, we fight. Ontario Bar 2011.
Education: JD - Queen's Law, BA Political Science - UBC
Bar Admissions: Ontario (2011), British Columbia (2012)
Associate
Contract Law & Business Formation
Newest partner as of 2023. Spent five years doing contract work for startups before joining us. Still young enough to understand what founders are going through, old enough to know which mistakes to avoid. Ontario Bar 2016.
Education: JD - York University, BComm - Ryerson
Bar Admissions: Ontario (2016)
Associate
Corporate Transactions
Joined straight out of articling in 2019. Handles a lot of our M&A work and somehow manages to make due diligence less painful than it should be. Bilingual, which helps when deals cross into Quebec. Ontario Bar 2019.
Education: JD - University of Ottawa, BCL - McGill
Bar Admissions: Ontario (2019), Quebec (2020)
We spend a lot of time here, might as well make it decent. Here's what it actually looks like day-to-day.
We don't do this for the trophies, but it's nice when people notice the work. Here's some of the recognition we've picked up along the way.
